Rynkeby Foods CEO to step down
After 17 years heading Team Rynkeby's main sponsor, Rynkeby Foods A/S, CEO Jørgen Dirksen has decided to leave the company to pursue other activities.
Jørgen Dirksen was instrumental in launching Scandinavia's biggest and best-known charity cycling team when, as a relatively new CEO at Rynkeby Foods A/S, he agreed to support an employee initiative to cycle from Denmark to Paris to see the finish of the Tour de France.
The year was 2002.
For a sponsorship of DKK 50,000 and all the juice that the riders could drink along the way, Rynkeby Foods acquired the main sponsorship of the cycling team that was dubbed 'Team Rynke' – named after Rynkeby Foods' advertising orangutan of the same name.
That year, 11 participants accompanied by one volunteer helper cycled to Paris and generated a profit of DKK 38,000. The funds were subsequently donated to the children's cancer ward at Odense University Hospital, and it was the beginning of a tradition.
Over 15 seasons, Team Rynkeby has raised over DKK 200 million for children with cancer throughout Scandinavia and has made the charity cycling team one of the biggest contributors to the fight against children's cancer.
Now the man behind the very first Team Rynkeby sponsorship has decided to step down. After 17 years heading Rynkeby Foods, Jørgen Dirksen has decided to leave the company to pursue other activities. However, he will continue working for a few more months in which he will help find his successor as CEO for Rynkeby Foods, just as he will ensure both the company and his successor a smooth and successful transition.
"Team Rynkeby is Jørgen Dirksen's brainchild, and naturally it will be a sad day when he eventually steps down. "We enjoy an ideal and trusting cooperation, and as chairman of Team Rynkeby Foundation Jørgen is in every respect an excellent sparring partner and a good friend who always focuses on what's best for the project and for the participants when important decisions need to be made. "I am deeply grateful for the dedication that he has shown the project," says Carl Erik Dalbøge, director of Team Rynkeby Foundation.
Jørgen Dirksen will do all he can to ensure that Team Rynkeby Foundation advances into the future. Dirksen will continue to act as chairman of the board for the Foundation, but he will eventually be replaced by the new CEO for Rynkeby Foods A/S.
Jørgen Dirksen is 61 years old, and he is already serving on a number of corporate boards, a commitment to which he will now be able to devote more time. Until the next general meeting, Jørgen Dirksen is chairman of the Danish Food and Drink Federation. He is also a board member of the Confederation of Danish Industry, as well as a board member of FoodDrinkEurope, an EU food industry confederation.
